A spectacular circular hike through Alpine meadows, dramatic mountain scenery and the living culture of the Ladin Dolomites.
The circular hike around Sass de Putia (Peitlerkofel), starting from Passo delle Erbe (Würzjoch), is one of the most beautiful routes in the Dolomites for those who want to experience an impressive mountain landscape, walk through flower-filled Alpine meadows and spend a day immersed in the traditional scenery of the Ladin valleys.
The route is approximately 12 km long with around 600 metres of elevation gain, making it an excellent choice for an active but enjoyable day in the mountains.

The trail circles the imposing Sass de Putia massif, and the landscape changes constantly along the way.
We begin among the gentle pastures and open trails around Passo delle Erbe before gradually entering a more dramatic mountain environment, with magnificent views of rocky slopes, Alpine meadows and the surrounding Dolomite ranges.
One of the highlights of the day is a stop for lunch at a traditional mountain hut, where we can enjoy regional specialties such as homemade dumplings, pasta with game, traditional soups and local desserts.

Like many of the great mountains of the Dolomites, Sass de Putia is made of rocks whose story began in an ancient tropical sea.
Millions of years ago, carbonate sediments accumulated in this marine environment and eventually became the rocks that form the Dolomites today.
Later, tectonic forces lifted these ancient marine formations high above sea level, while erosion gradually sculpted the dramatic cliffs, terraces and scree slopes that characterize the mountain.
Walking around Sass de Putia gives us an excellent opportunity to observe how dramatically the landscape changes — from the green meadows around Passo delle Erbe to the rugged rocky terrain at the foot of the massif.
Rising powerfully above the surrounding pastures, Sass de Putia is one of the most striking and photogenic mountains in this part of the Dolomites.

The area around Passo delle Erbe is particularly fascinating because its natural beauty is deeply connected to the culture of the Ladin people, whose history and traditions have shaped the Dolomites for centuries.
Ladin heritage can be discovered not only in local place names and language, but also in the landscape itself — in traditional mountain farms, summer pastures, family-run mountain huts, local cuisine and the close relationship between people and the land.
Hiking around Sass de Putia is therefore much more than completing a beautiful circular trail.
It is an opportunity to experience a living mountain culture where summer grazing, cheesemaking, family-run huts and traditional food are still part of everyday life.It is a hike where landscape, geology and Ladin culture come together, offering a deeper and more authentic way to experience the Dolomites.
